OUR PHILOSOPHY
The goal of the Somerset Learning Center is to help develop students of all abilities into more competent and self-confident learners. We believe that with appropriate instruction, each student can learn and improve, and have assembled excellent educators, a structured environment, and a practical approach that enable our students to achieve academic success. We believe that students’ needs are best met through an individual learning program that is flexible to include supplemental instruction, tutoring, and/or enrichment. We are sincerely committed to academic excellence, and have helped thousands of students improve academic skills, build self-confidence and acquire the love of learning!

WHY THE SOMERSET LEARNING CENTER?
At the Somerset Learning Center, our students take THE RIGHT STEP TO ACADEMIC SUCCESS! Here are some reasons why:

• Our individual learning programs are designed to meet the needs of each student, from special education to the gifted. Students can attend the Center from kindergarten through college.
• Highly qualified and experienced teachers take a keen and personal interest in each student. The teachers engage their students in the learning process and make education fun!
• Our environment is reassuring and non-threatening. A maximum of three students can work in a private room with a teacher - not as part of a group, but each on his or her own individual learning program.
• We offer the flexibility to combine several subject areas into a student’s program. In addition, we help support difficult schoolwork and give homework help whenever needed.
• We provide close contact and cooperation with the classroom teacher or guidance counselor when required. The involvement of the school, the Center, and the family can often be valuable in achieving academic gains.
• Instruction for students with learning difficulties is based on the research-proven and highly acclaimed Orton-Gillingham method for teaching reading and spelling.
• We have over eighteen years of experience in providing supplemental educational services and a demonstrated record of success, stability and accomplishment! Because we have concentrated our efforts in one location, we have established relationships with many personnel at local public and private schools and are familiar with schools’ curriculums.

THE CENTER
The Center was founded over eighteen years ago by a reading specialist and is an established and reliable provider of supplemental education. Individually owned and operated, the Center can be used to address specific, short-term concerns or ongoing educational issues. Consistently recommended by educators, the Center is a vital educational resource within and beyond Somerset County, New Jersey.

THE DIRECTOR
Lana S. Marshak is an experienced educator. She has been supervising all facets of the Center, including testing, diagnosis, and curriculum planning, for the past eight years. She is personally involved with each family, and maintains continuous contact with parents and teachers. Mrs. Marshak holds a bachelors degree from the Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art and a masters degree from Cornell University. She is a member of the International Dyslexia Association and the International Reading Association.

OUR TEACHERS
All members of the Center’s staff are New Jersey certified, experienced teachers. Most of our teachers have earned advanced degrees and represent multiple educational specialties. Each of the highly qualified instructors cares about the education of children and is dedicated to helping each student achieve academic success, gain self-confidence, and become a motivated learner. Teachers are paired with students based on their specialties, and to create a stable and consistent learning environment, all attempts are made to maintain these pairings.

OUR EDUCATIONAL PLAN

Our educational plan consists of the following components:

• Skills Assessment
A comprehensive skills assessment is performed to assess the student’s baseline skills. This in-depth diagnosis of a student’s strengths and weaknesses as well as parental concerns and goals are utilized to develop a personal learning program for each student to address his or her academic needs.
• Instruction
Instruction is provided by certified and experienced teachers and can include several subject areas. Sessions are limited to three students per instructor in a private room. The frequency of weekly sessions and the length of the program are determined by each student’s specific goals.
• Progress
It is a priority at the Center to maintain an open flow of communication with parents. Parents are informed of their child’s progress through frequent, informal conferences with teachers as well as periodic progress reports. Parents are also encouraged to communicate with the Center’s staff to share their observations, needs, or concerns.

Students may register at any time throughout the year for after-school, Saturday morning, and summer sessions. To register for instruction, please call the Center at (908) 725-5454.
