HOMEWORK HELP
When a child is struggling in school, it may be due to a deficiency in a fundamental area such as reading, writing, or math. Some children also need extra help understanding new concepts until they can do homework independently. At the Somerset Learning Center, we provide a complete academic support approach that is unique! We offer immediate assistance with current school assignments WHILE re-teaching or reinforcing concepts a student has not mastered in the past, as determined by our Skills Assessment.

When students are having difficulty in school, we offer immediate homework help with difficult subjects or assignments to help them raise grades and build confidence in the PRESENT. For such school support (or tutoring), we use the student’s own textbooks and materials. AT THE SAME TIME, we use our own materials to provide supplemental instruction to correct any knowledge gaps the student may have and to build a firm foundation for new concepts. School Support can also be embedded with a Study Skills program to improve grades while learning the skills necessary to study effectively.

This dual approach allows students to have immediate results in their academic performance while building a strong foundation. Parents also benefit from this as homework struggles are eliminated at home, and children become more positive, independent, and successful in school. This complete academic support approach is offered at the same hourly rate as all our programs, and can benefit the gifted student, the student with learning difficulties, or the student who is just not working to potential.

STUDY SKILLS
Many students who WANT to learn have difficulty in school, often because they do not know HOW to learn. Study skills are skills essential for learning, and yet most school curriculums do not provide a course on study and organizational strategies. Our study skills program enables students to overcome difficulties by improving the effectiveness of their learning. Students become successful learners when they become skilled in the techniques for gathering information, retaining it, and demonstrating what they know. Throughout our study skills program we encourage students to bring in their book bag with agenda, notebooks, and textbooks, in order to start applying proper study habits to their personal materials and assignments. This program is especially valuable for the middle school and the high school student trying to manage an increasing workload. The study skills program can be combined with homework help and support when appropriate. Our study skills program can include:

Organization of space and materials
Time management
Listening skills
Listening and taking notes
How to read textbooks
Note taking methods
Techniques for improving memory
Preparing for and taking tests
Following directions

ENRICHMENT
Many high performing students are not eligible for the gifted programs in their schools, or such programs may not even exist. For the highly capable student, this can lead to boredom and even frustration. At the Somerset Learning Center, our enrichment programs offer such students appropriately challenging instruction, exposure to above grade level material, and opportunity for higher learning.

Some advanced students may have a skill area that is weak in relation to their other abilities. It is often difficult for such students to get assistance they need in school because they are performing well enough in the classroom. We can create a program to address this specific deficiency so the student can excel in ALL areas.

As part of our enrichment services, we can begin preparing middle school students for the SAT. Parents who choose this program for their children are wise to take maximum advantage of the time that is needed to build strong comprehension, vocabulary, math and writing skills well in advance of the test date!

KINDERGARTEN READING READINESS
Today’s kindergarten programs are focusing more and more on reading instruction. Therefore, it is very important that preschool age children have the necessary readiness skills to begin learning how to read. Without certain auditory and visual discrimination skills, kindergarten children will have difficulty with early reading tasks. At Somerset Learning Center, we provide all the necessary instruction and reinforcement that a preschool or a kindergarten student needs to be successful right from the start of their education. We use tailor-made materials to build these important skills in a fun and nurturing environment. Our readiness program can include:

Rhyming
Listening and following directions
Fine motor skills
Visual discrimination skills
Letter and Number Recognition
Letter and Number Formation
Sequencing / Matching / Classifying
